All Our Dear Friends

We hope this message finds you, your family and your friends safe and sound.

After almost 3 year break we are all looking forward to start our travels and exploring new places, and new sites. The minimized human activity inadvertently proved to be a blessing for nature, giving it a chance to recuperate and heal itself.

In the last 3 years or so, 3 Global Bio-Diversity Hotspots in India- The Himalayas, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and The Western Ghats have come out with many discoveries.

Generally, it is very rare to find new species of birds and mammals. But, India added 557 new species to its count, which includes 407 new species and 150 new records. This brings its faunal species to 1,02,718 named species of animals.

Likewise, India added 267 plant species to the Flora of the Country. With 202 new plant species and 65 new records. India now has about 45,000 species of plants, identified and classified of which around 28% are endemic to India. In these 2 years Forest and Tree cover also increased by 2,261 sqkm.

A special mention for The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 20 new species from different groups including Narcondam Tree Shrew. A rare and exciting discovery brings the total to 11,000 faunal counts. These islands are hidden treasure of 2500 species of flowering plants of which 223 species are endemic, 55 species of mammals (32 endemic), 244 species of birds (96 endemic), 76 species of reptiles (24 endemic) and around 179 species of coral.

Most of the discoveries were made in the year 2020 but 2021 also brought exciting news. A new species of snake, the Himalayan Kukri, was discovered. A new species of squirrel, the Tibetan Wolly Flying Squirrel was discovered. A new record was made after 25 years of a species from the Laughing Thrush family-Mount Victoria Babax. Recently a sighting of an Endangered Gharial in the River Brahmaputra indicates the resilience of nature.

More on sightings- In March 2022 a new record of sighting of a rare bird for Delhi NCR was made by a group of birders- A Non-breeding Male Brambling normally seen in Europe or in India in higher reaches of the Himalayas like in Kashmir, Himachal and nearer to Delhi in hills above Doon Valley.

Quite recently in the year 2024 Asiatic Golden Cat has been rediscovered in Manas National Park
