Most of the discoveries were made in the year 2020 but 2021 also brought exciting news. A new species of snake, the Himalayan Kukri, was discovered. A new species of squirrel, the Tibetan Wolly Flying Squirrel was discovered. A new record was made after 25 years of a species from the Laughing Thrush family-Mount Victoria Babax. Recently a sighting of an Endangered Gharial in the River Brahmaputra indicates the resilience of nature.
In March 2022 a new record of sighting of a rare bird for Delhi NCR was made by a group of birders- A Non-breeding Male Brambling normally seen in Europe or in India in higher reaches of the Himalayas like in Kashmir, Himachal and nearer to Delhi in hills above Doon Valley.

Wildlife in India has been more known for because of popular national parks of North and Central India like- Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Ranthambore and Corbett. India added 557 new species to its count, which includes 407 new species & 150 new records. This brings its faunal species to 1,02,718 named species of animals. India has over 350 species of mammals and over 1225 forms of birds, some of them are endemic to India only. Some of the unique species found in India are Golden Langur, Namdapha flying squirrel, Lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, Flying Squirrel, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Asiatic Lion, Nilgai, the Spiral Horned Black Buck, the four horned Chausingha.
India, one of the 12 megadiversity countries, is very rich in biodiversity. Over 1200 species of birds comprising at least 13 % of the world’s birds are found in India. Biogeographically, India is situated at the tri-junction of three realms namely Afro-tropical, Indo-Malayan and Paleo-Arctic realms, and therefore, has characteristic elements from each of them.
